How Uber & Lyft Insurance Coverage Works in Maryland
The driver’s activity in the app can determine whether a claim involves personal auto insurance, contingent liability coverage, or a commercial liability policy.
Driver Is Offline
When the driver isn’t logged into the rideshare app, the driver’s personal auto insurance policy generally applies. Maryland’s minimum limits are $30,000 per person and $60,000 per accident for bodily injury, plus $15,000 for property damage. Those limits may not cover all losses from a serious collision.
Driver Is Waiting for a Request
If the driver is logged in but hasn’t accepted a ride, contingent liability coverage may apply. It generally provides up to $50,000 per injured person, $100,000 per accident, and $25,000 for property damage, subject to the policy and circumstances.
Driver Accepted a Ride
After a driver accepts a request and while a passenger is being transported, Uber and Lyft generally provide primary commercial liability coverage of up to $1 million. Depending on the policy and crash, uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage may also apply when the responsible driver lacks sufficient insurance.
